This September, Apple announced three new iPhones: The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the high-end iPhone X. These three phones start at $699, $799, and $999, respectively.
Apple released their newest iPhone 8 and 8 Plus smartphones last September 12. It skipped the iPhone7 S and iPhone7S Plus model which will overshadowed what would have been its normal flagship – the iPhone X.
According to reports, the iPhone8 and Plus has a very tiny feedback from its launch-day. It gave the impression that most people are waiting for the release of the iPhone X; which will be introduced on November 3rd.
There is almost certainly one significant reason to consider the iPhone 8 and the 8 Plus over the iPhone X since the three are all functionally identical.
All of these phones support the Qi wireless-charging standard as well as fast charging. Although, the downside is that you’ll have to buy extra accessories if you choose the new charging method. Apple offers several Qi wireless-charging pads — a Lightning-to-USB-C cable and a USB-C Power Delivery-compatible charger, specifically — if you want to use fast charging for your iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or X.
To some, the iPhone X casts a very large and noticeable shadow over the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. It features a modified design, new display, and a few specification bumps. These additions make the iPhone X capable of things the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus simply cannot do.
Screen Size & Design
The three new iPhones actually have significantly different designs despite the initial iterative appearance of the iPhone 8.
The iPhone X features a screen that covers almost the entire the front of the phone, making it the first iPhone with an edge-to-edge display. The screen is 5.8 inches, even larger than the one found on iPhone 8 Plus, which is 5.5 inches.
OLED Display (HDR)
While all three new iPhone models support HDR10 and Dolby Vision playback, only the iPhone X comes with a true HDR display. The OLED display has a resolution of 2,436 x 1,125 pixels, or 458 pixels per inch. Although the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 actually has a greater pixel density, which allows the device to produce truer dark colours.
The iPhone 8 has a similar retina HD display to the iPhone 7; this won’t be as clear as the iPhone X. However, since it does not have the dent at the top of the screen, you will get a better picture.
This OLED display, which Apple is calling the Super Retina HD display can produce deeper blacks. By turning off pixels that are black, whereas, with an LCD, those pixels are kept on, the iPhone X accomplishes this. And how is it done? Well, using OLED technology instead of the LCD screens with IPS found on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. The OLED display on the iPhone X has a significantly higher contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, versus 1,300:1 on the iPhone 8 Plus and 1,400:1 on the iPhone 8.
Face ID recognition
The iPhone X uses facial recognition technology; dubbed Face ID to unlock the smartphone. You can look at your phone and it will recognize your face and automatically unlock itself.
Apple’s senior vice president of marketing, Phil Schiller made the announcement at the company’s headquarters event in Cupertino, California. The Face ID technology is “the future of how we unlock your phone and protect your information,” Schiller said.
The iPhone X display extends from the top of the phone all the way to the bottom edge, leaving only a small space at the top for the nudge, which houses a host of sensors, including the new TrueDepth camera. The tech takes advantage of the TrueDepth camera and its accompanying subsystem in the phone, which has a variety of sensors including infrared, floor illuminator, dot projector, proximity sensor, and ambient light sensor.
This means that there is no home button and Touch ID sensor anymore. All that time spent building muscle memory for Touch ID was for naught. Instead, with the iPhone X at least, you’ll now have to use what is called Face ID to get into your phone. Since Touch ID is missing, you’ll use Face ID to authenticate purchases using Apple Wallet.
Face ID works if you change your hair or put on a hat, and if you wear glasses. It adapts if your face changes over time, like if you grow a beard. The processing happens on device, so it can be kept secure in a special enclave in the phone. You have to be actively paying attention to the phone to unlock it.
Face ID is attention aware too, which means it won’t s***t past the lock screen when you don’t want it to, such as when you’re reading notifications.
Dual OIS
While it might not sound like much, the game has changed in terms of specs but all three iPhones still come with 12-megapixel rear cameras and 7-megapixel shooters up front. Both the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus have an additional rear camera sensor. These dual cameras have two different lenses: wide angle and telephoto.
The iPhone X has optical image stabilization (OIS) for both cameras. The iPhone 8 Plus only has OIS on its wide-angle camera, leaving the telephoto camera more susceptible to camera shake.
The iPhone 8 Plus telephoto lens has f/2.8 aperture, while the iPhone X has an f/2.4 telephoto lens. This gives a slight edge in depth of field and low light shots with the telephoto lens on the iPhone X.
There are important advancements to the iPhone X’s camera that, on paper, mean it should take better photos than ever before.
For starters, pixels are larger and the Image Signal Processor (ISP) is much faster. Apple promises 83% more light in the photos and 36% more light for the second rear sensor. It also marks it as a more interesting camera than the single-sensor one on the Samsung Galaxy S8.
