Marlboro’s Plans to Stop Producing Cigarettes

Do you smoke? You might not want to hear this bad news…

“Philip Morris is known for cigarettes. Every year, many smokers give them up. Now it’sour turn.” as stated by Philip Morris in their ads in several UK newspapers.

Philip Morris International, the parent company of Marlboro has made a big decision to stop producing cigarettes entirely as their New Year’s resolution this 2019. Although no dates has (have) been given by the said company, they are increasing their investment in smoke-free products according to some information that came from the United States.

Their idea is that they will stop producing cigarettes and move over to a much better alternative helping both their consumers and the environment as well. The alternative that they plan to switch to is (the production of) e-cigarettes and heated tobacco. The advantage in switching to the said products, as per the company, is that it could potentially reduce the number of harmful chemicals in cigarettes by around 95%, but these are still all assumptions since research is still under process.

Their focus is to switch over to their product known as IQOS. It’s a type of device that basically heats up tobacco instead of burning it. As stated in PMI’s website:

“Here’s the key point: the tobacco in a cigarette burns at temperatures in excess of 600°C, generating smoke that contains high levels of harmful chemicals. But IQOS heats tobacco to much lower temperatures, up to 350°C, without combustion, fire, ash, or smoke. The lower temperature heating releases the true taste of heated tobacco.”

Because the tobacco is heated and not burned, the levels of harmful chemicals are significantly reduced compared to cigarette smoke.” You might ask yourself: “How could this product appeal to smokers?” Well one thing is that it gives a nicotine containing vapor – not smoke.

This is a really bold move being made by a world-famous company. As of this time, we can’t really tell if this really would be helpful to consumers’ health considering that research is still being done with their new products. However, all in all, if this aids in helping to reduce smoke that we make, its already an advantage for our planet, and we might never know, perhaps this might be a step that will motivate other companies to invest and check for other alternatives to what we’re used to – tobacco.
